Dr. Pratya Jaratjitwilai professional journey began at Prince of Songkla University Hospital in Hat Yai, Songkhla. Initially, his ambition was to excel in both academic knowledge and surgical skills. He observed the professors closely, learning not only surgical techniques but also the art of patient interaction. Watching them address serious bone and joint conditions with empathy and compassion, sometimes holding a patient’s gaze as they explained complex issues, taught him the profound impact of human connection in medicine. 

This immersive environment combined with hands-on opportunities due to a limited number of residents, refined his academic and surgical skills. During this time, he also represented the university as a tennis player in national competitions, a testament to his dedication and teamwork.

After receiving Thai Board of Orthopedic Surgery certification, he became a full-time orthopedic consultant at Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital in Sriracha, Chonburi. This regional hospital served a large population and handled numerous major trauma cases due to traffic accidents. Dr. Pratya Jaratjitwilai managed a wide variety of orthopedic conditions including fractures, joint dislocations and ligament injuries. Working with patients ranging from young professionals eager to return to work and elderly individuals striving to regain independence reshaped his perspective.

Dr. Pratya Jaratjitwilai focus evolved from personal achievement to prioritizing the health and happiness of his patients and their families. The genuine smiles of recovered patients became his greatest reward and fuelled his passion for this invaluable profession.

Returning to Chonburi, He joined Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, a leading international hospital in Eastern Seaboard of Thailand. Here, he primarily manages patients with shoulder and knee issues as well as orthopedic trauma cases. With a diverse patient base from Thailand and abroad, He’s learned to navigate varying expectations and cultural nuances to achieve optimal outcomes. His role also extended to serving as the team physician for Pattaya United Football Club during its time in the Thai Premier League.

After a few years, he was selected for a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery fellowship at the Orthopedic Excellence Center at Lerdsin Hospital in Bangkok. Under the mentorship of Dr. Wichan Kanchanatawan, one of the country’s leading surgeons.

“I honed my surgical skills, expanded my knowledge and embraced uncompromised medical ethics. This mentorship elevated my practice to a new level”, he said!

Dr. Pratya Jaratjitwilai’s surgical experiences:

“I have performed over 1,000 cases of arthroscopic shoulder surgeries addressing conditions such as rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder, dislocations and osteoarthritis. Similarly, I’ve completed more than 1,000 arthroscopic knee surgeries including ligament reconstructions (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, PLC), meniscus repairs and cartilage restoration procedures. My expertise also includes reverse total shoulder replacements, high tibial osteotomies and fracture surgeries”, he presented with confidence!

In the outpatient clinic, he utilizes Ultrasound-Guided Injections and increasingly popular Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). While he’s conducted numerous surgeries, he recommends surgery only when necessary or when there is no improvement with conservative treatment. He takes the time to explain all treatment options, including their risks, benefits and complications, ensuring patients make informed decisions.
