1. Cold Compression (Cold Pack or Cryocuff)
Apply cold compression for 20 minutes, 3-4 times per day, for 2-3 days or until the swelling subsides.
2. Ankle Pumping Exercise
Frequently perform ankle pumps by raising and lowering the foot to improve circulation in the leg and reduce swelling.
3. Isometric Quadriceps Exercise
Contract the thigh muscles by pressing them down against the bed with the knee straight. Hold for 10 seconds, rest for 5 seconds. Repeat 10-20 times per set, 3-5 sets per day.
4. Straight Leg Raising Exercise
Perform straight leg raises while keeping the knee extended. Assistance may be required. Repeat 10-20 times per set, 3-5 sets per day.
5. Hip Abduction Exercise
Perform hip abduction by raising the leg out to the side. Assistance may be required. Repeat 10-20 times per set, 3-5 sets per day.
6. Knee Straightening
Try to maintain the knee in a straight position as much as possible. Use a small pillow under the knee to minimize support.
7. Using Crutches/Walker for Ambulation
Weight-bearing status depends on the operation. Please consult your orthopedic surgeon for clarification:
- Partial Weight-Bearing: Allowed to bear no more than 50% of the body weight.
- Non-Weight-Bearing: No weight-bearing allowed, though some individuals may be permitted to perform toe-touch or foot-touch weight-bearing for balance purposes if they have difficulty maintaining balance.
- Axillary Crutches are recommended.
